We learned a lot from this experience. Here is what we
will do differently next time.
- Get permission/insurance earlier so we can issue
press releases earlier.
- Move the tax drop area further into the parking lot
to keep traffic entering the parking lot from blocking
Rosecrans (see map below).
- Divert those with special needs (items 3-5) to the
northeast part of the parking lot.
- Offer stamps and envelopes for sale. These could be
offered in exchange for donations to the SDLP or sold by
Blockbuster video to attract customers. Blockbuster
should have "Harry's War" video tapes stacked on the
counter for sale or rent.
- Provide extension forms.
- Offer tax consulting by libertarian tax consultants
in temporary offices at tables under the Libertarian
canopy. They will have little time to spend with each
desperate taxpayer, so they will likely help the
taxpayers complete extension forms and arrange an
appointment at a later time to prepare a return.
- Include a party area where Chucky Cheese and the
restaurant (if it is occupied) offer free food and drink,
and the SDLP and associated groups offer empathy and
advice. Else include discount offers with our
handouts.
- The commercial literature and political handouts were
of such varied sizes that they were too difficult to
collate and handle. If such is the case next time, we'll
stuff one 8-1/2"x11" envelope with one set of material
for handout at the entrance to the drop area. To mitigate
the cost of the envelope, it should have something useful
printed on it in lieu of a separate handout. The SDLP
could print its message on a standard envelope, or one of
the commercial establishments may want to offer a
reusable promotional envelope.
- Leave the emergency delivery bikes and backpacks in a
conspicuous place near the drop area to give taxpayers
confidence that their returns will be delivered in
time.
- Move the first sign further east on Camino Del Rio,
light it and secure helium-filled balloons from it and
every other sign. Emphasize FREE & EASY TAX DROP on
the sign.
- Line the route with paper bags with sand ballast and
candles in them.
- Advertise the stamps, envelopes, extension forms,
consulting and Glasshouse square offerings on separate
signs along the route like the old Berma Shave signs. The
entrance, instruction and exit signs are OK as-is.
- Put signs on Midway to encourage taxpayers there to
use the Kurtz or Sports Arena access to Glasshouse
square.
These lessons are reflected in the new arrangement.
