FOR NOLAN QUIZ AND POLL |

The San Diego Libertarian Party (SDLP) uses small clipboards to augment their electronic Nolan chart for fairs, swap meets, gun shows, etc. When the electronic board is busy or folks want to privately take the quiz, a clip board with a bunch of 5"x7" quizzes in it and a pen attached by a string is given to them. Extra quizzes are on a table for observers to take and participants to utilize. Cheap little golf pencils were made available for this purpose. This allows a two-person staff to process a large number of people through the quiz. The back of the quiz has an explanation, scoring procedure, and a place for contact information. Booth people volunteer to score the quiz as soon as it appears complete. If the participants score in the libertarian quadrant, they are asked to complete the contact information to receive a free copy of the newsletter and select one old issue of Reason, Liberty, Freeman or other libertarian publication. Subsequently, Libertarians would follow-up with membership and other recruiting calls and mailings. Each participant is thanked and a big deal is made about putting a spherical colored stick pin in a foam board version of the Nolan chart to indicate their place in the political spectrum. It's interesting to color code the responses by sex or party affiliation. The stick pins also give credibility to the quiz that encourages observers to participate.
A second use of small clip boards would be for polling. In this case each clip board has a cover page with "What three things bug you most?" on it. Under the cover is a pad of paper on which people can jot their complaints. The pollster should have one cover page stuck on a hat, so people are not intimidated. With a number of these clip boards, only one libertarian is needed to conduct exit polls at each polling place. Morning and evening should be sufficient. In exchange for the return of each clipboard, the participant is given a Nolan quiz sheet like that used for fairs or a World's Smallest Political Quiz card. Libertarians select from among the most prevalent complaints a hot topic most consistent with libertarianism, and announce their support for it when they publish the results of the poll with a Libertarian spin. |
