Our
79th Assembly District is blessed with more physical assets
than any other district in the State of California and yet continually
registers near the bottom of the scale when compared financially to other
districts in the State. The 79th Assembly District is a
transportation "superstar". The
79th District has a seaport with commercial, military, and
recreational facilities, an airport with enough land to become a major
international airport (cargo or passenger), four (4) major freeways (5, 15,
94, 805), and an international border with Mexico, the gateway for
millions of tourists and the new NAFTA industries. So why is the 79th District widely viewed as a depressed area in need of a handout? When we examine this contradiction it leads to only one inescapable conclusion: lack of a comprehensive approach by district local governments to fully utilize these natural and man-made assets for the advantage of its citizens. In the past, entrenched
career politicians like Juan Vargas have been more concerned with
guaranteeing their own political survival, enriching the lives of the few
from the plunder of the many, than with ensuring the
development and enrichment of the 79th District and its
inhabitants. This November, you have a chance to change all this, to send a message -- loudly and clearly -- to these career politicians that you've had enough of their enriching themselves and their friends at your expense. There's no pretending that it won't be tough. But it can be done with your help. LEADERSHIP
TO PROSPERITY Richard Cardulla is a community leader and activist near downtown and the neighboring areas of Sherman Heights, Logan Heights, and Grant Hill. Cardulla has been instrumental in the revitalization of these inner-city communities. He personally confronted the Sherman Heights Gang, which was terrorizing the local residents, and cleared them out of Grant Hill Park, making it, today, a place for families to enjoy. As a builder, Cardulla has restored over 40 apartments and homes (many of historic significance) in the mentioned communities, thereby contributing to the housing stock of the neighborhoods. As a former officer in the United States Merchant Marines who served in Viet Nam, he has experienced special pleasure in his restoration of the historic Nor-Goode House in Golden Hills for use by the San Diego Viet Nam Veterans. Presently Cardulla is working with the City of San Diego's Planning Department to re-zone these inner-city communities to accommodate the need for higher density along the San Diego Trolley so that revitalization will translate into "smart growth" and sustainable development. RICHARD
CARDULLA FOR 79TH ASSEMBLY The California 79th
Assembly District has over 127,000 registered voters. During the March primary election only 50,537 voted, 39%. Vargas
received 27,000 of the votes, only 20%. Looked at another way, Vargas
didn't get 80% of the vote, which we intend to target. Although the odds are
great we know with your support we can have an upset victory in November
2000. We will continue to use
our Billboards (see Media) on the I-5 in National
City and at Main & Broadway in Chula Vista. We will go door-to-door
contacting voters and make signs available to them. We will be contacting the
media regularly, participating in debates and forums, and meeting the
people in the community. San Diegans have shown that they are tired of political corruption (see Our Opponent) and believe that bad government is the cause of many of the region's problems. San Diego Union Tribune,
July 17, 2000: "If there is a single root cause it's
government, said an overwhelming percentage of those responding to the
survey. Residents also voiced a distrust of public officials when they
said the best way to solve the region's problems is to reduce government
corruption. "When asked to
choose among a number of potential causes, 'government spending money on
the wrong things' was cited as the No. 1 reason. And when asked to rank a
number of proposed solutions, the greatest support -- 89 percent -- was
for reducing corruption in government, followed closely by building a
superior transit system." * * In a wide-ranging
telephone poll of 2,000 San Diego County adults by the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California. It has always been
difficult to unseat a career politician; however because of the large
margin of uncommitted voters in the 79th Assembly District, and
considering the public's disgust with political corruption by these
entrenched politicians, the time is right for an upset victory in
November. San Diego City Councilman Juan Vargas' record clearly
demonstrates his corruption and incompetence.
When one considers his "do nothing" record in office, his
leaving future 8th district city council members encumbered
with a mountain of debt, his luke warm support from the Mexican-American
community, and his left leaning anti-business bias, it is apparent that
our opponent Vargas is particularly vulnerable. |
