| LIBERTY June 1999 Libertarian Party of California, San Diego Region v.IX i.6 Libertarian Supper Club Ali Rasheed and Joanne Cornwell Community Economic Development: Home Grown Haircare Tuesday June 15, 1999 Ali Rasheed and Joanne Cornwell are owners of Braiding es- tablishments. Mr. Rasheed also works for the San Diego City School District in Human Services, and Ms. Cornwell for San Diego State University, in Black Studies. The state cosmetology licensing bu- reau is trying to force braiders to go through the cosmetology program, even though braiding is not included in it and, in fact, braiders do not use chemicals or other agents used by other types of beauty salons. These two owners have been fighting this added regulation and its attendant cost (which would raise prices for cus- tomers) and, in fact, the Braidery was harassed by state regulators. Coco's Balboa, at 5955 Balboa, just west of I 805, on the south side of the street. Dinner Choices: sirloin steak, Greek chicken salad, or Gardenburger. Arrive 6:15 p.m. to order, Dinner about 6:45 p.m. speaker at 7:30 p.m. Dinner and program $14, Program only $5. Solana Beach Libertarian Coffee Klatch Monday, June 28, 1999 7 pm @ the Java Depot in Solana Beach New Wave Politics: How alternative parties are benefitting from the demise of the 2-party monopoly. Master of Ceremonies: JR (nobody) Graham -political comedian. With special guests from most of the alternative parties American Independent, Peace & Free- dom, Reform, Natural Law, Green... & Libertarian... Goal: Build Bridges - Not Walls. Hostess: Victoria Vaughan Gun Show Report MAX NEWBURY After hanging out with more Libertarians lately I believe I may have become influenced by some of their thinking; I feel it is en- tirely inappropriate that I speak for anyone but myself. The hours I spent staffing the Del Mar Gun Show were enjoyable; and frankly, quite fun at times. Craig showed up Saturday afternoon in full Darth Vader cos- tume with BATF boldly emblazoned across the helmet. Carrying a (empty) box marked "gun drop", and with black cape flowing, he zipped through the crowd handing out literature talking to anyone who would listen. They smiled or laughed, and he appeared to be having fun, too; that is, until one of the show management, seem- ingly, could no longer reconcile fear compatible with his sense of humor. Craig claimed First Amendment Rights that later became the subject of yet another debate on the local SDLP e-mail list. In due course, the Darth Vader demonstration was terminated as a courte- ous gesture. I was encouraged by the increased interest in the LP by mem- bers of the NRA, at least those who staffed the NRA booth. I talked with a few of them, some at our table. Later, I noticed others en- grossed in discussions with Libertarians, as well. I got the distinct feeling these hard-core gun buffs will soon have to give up on "turncoat Republicans" (their words). I have no particular appre- ciation for the NRA other than the fact they are an influential group that effectively endorse candidates for public office (howsoever misplaced). After a survey of the staff, measurable results were indicated as follows: 1) The shuttle is useful, we should try it again. 2) Three is the ideal number of staff, enabling one to roam at all times. 3) We had discussions with about 100 people and exchanged comments with another 200. 4) Most appeared to be primarily interested in guns and gun rights, while about 35 percent seemed more interested in general politics. 5) In total, we distributed some 800 pieces of literature, about 300 of which were specifically gun oriented. 6) About 60 "Nolan Quizzes", some of which were filled out on the spot. 7) Eight appeared to be ready to join the Party and took applications for that. 8) Twenty-six registered to vote Libertarian. 9) We got 23 signatures on an initiative petition to reduce DMV taxes. 10) The respondents affirmed they would staff the gun show again. Chairs Report Steve Green I have always been surprised at the monolith of establishment politics in San Diego. You can look at almost any nonpartisan local officeholder and see a carbon copy of all of the rest (with a couple notable exceptions). The only time they disagree is when they are running against each other---but even then the basic premise re- mains the same: more government. Only the methods vary. Look at our civic organizations. The same people that run the Chamber of Commerce pay to be board members of the so-called San Diego County Taxpayers Association. You can always count on the Chamber to advocate business subsidies. Then afterward, the SDCTA endorses the plan as long as they get some cosmetic change to it. That way they appear to be independent. Can any- body remember the last subsidy/tax hike that was opposed by either of these organizations? I can't. Then we have our media. The Union-Tribune is wonderful at endorsing virtually all business welfare plans. Should someone dare stand in the way, you can always count on the U-T to launch attacks that should make any responsible journalist squeamish. The television stations always have good yes-man editorials, too. I have to almost laugh at the mayoral candidates now lining up in the City of San Diego; not one new face and not one new fresh idea. We have Ron Roberts the gun-grabbing authoritarian and George Stevens the other gun-grabbing authoritarian. Both desire to regulate the gasoline market. Then we have Barbara Warden and all of her statist spending projects. Steve Peace bowed out, opting to advocate more socialism at the State level. Steve Cushman wanted the job, but appears to have left the race as well---he advocated so much business welfare that no voter could possibly take his inde- pendence seriously. If the potential candidates were not so tragic, I would think it a joke. But there is hope. We have made great strides against their welfare projects, successfully fighting many tax increases and be- ing a lone voice among the wilderness. The media receives a great many letters to the editor from Libertarians and we often have inter- views. Please keep up the good work and let's look forward to the day that the monolith collapses. Hike Blue Sky Ecological Reserve Poway Saturday, June 26, 1999 We'll be hiking through a riparian woodland and then up a chaparral-covered hillside to Lake Ramona, where we will have lunch. The total distance is about five miles, unless we decide to take a side trip to Lake Poway. We've done this hike before, most recently in February, 1996. DIRECTIONS: Take Interstate 15 north and exit at Rancho Bernardo Road. Follow Rancho Bernardo Road about three miles east until it changes into Espola road and turns south. There is a parking area on the left (east) side of Espola road, next to a small sign for Green Valley Truck Trail. We will meet at the parking area. The nominal starting time is 10:00 AM. I will be at the parking area by 9:45, and at 10:15 we will hit the trail. There will be the usual optional meeting at an ice cream parlor after the hike. Wear sturdy shoes and layered clothing and take water, lunch, and sun protection. Take a camera if you wish. You may want to call 619-289-1212 for the latest weather information. CONTACT: Philip Erdelsky at pje@acm.org or 619-282-8611. For more extensive and up-to-date information, including maps, point your web browser to efgh.com/hike. Note: We haven't had injuries on our hikes, but the insanity of current liability decisions prompts the following: These hikes are not officially sponsored by any group or individual. No one as- sumes liability for anyone else. Politics as Usual BZ Betsy Tax Freedom Day, Part I Tuesday, May 11 was Tax Freedom Day. An American paying the average tax rate works from January 1st till then for the govern- ment - federal, state, and local - and for himself the rest of the year. Calculated by the Tax Foundation annually, Tax Freedom Day con- tinues to fall on a later date each year. Just four years ago, it came on May 3. This year is another record. National Review's Internet Update, May 10, 1999 http://www.nationalreview.com/ Tax Freedom Day, Part II The computations do NOT include the hidden costs of gov- ernment, such as the incredible amount of time and aggravation individuals and companies spend complying with regulations and filling out forms. Postal Annex and Mail Boxes Etc. on Government Hit List! New postal regulations require Private Mailbox Holders to dis- close their address status with the designation "PMB" before the suite number (under the guise of wanting to stem fraudulent trans- actions). Submitted by Stuart Burkow, May 5, 1999 Big Brother Knows Better than Mother An HIV-positive mother lost custody of her baby after she insisted on breast-feeding. The court placed the child with the par- ents upon the conditions that the mother not breast feed the child and that the parents comply with medical treatment as directed by the child's physician. New York Times, April 18, 1999 Reappraising Aids, March, 1999 French Can Get Busted for Working Too Hard Bernard Rocquemont, executive of a radar manufacturing com- pany, was threatened with a $16,700 fine and imprisonment because a group of managers that he supervised worked more than the legal weekly maximum of 39 hours per week (going down to 35 hours in January, 2000). Business Week, May 3, 1999 Unfunny Comic Book History Senator Kefauver's 1950's crime hearings scapegoated the whole comic book industry as pornography for tots. The hearings forced a draconian "self-regulating" Comics Code Authority on publishers; the edict stamped out the crime, war, and horror comics (categories that tended to appeal to an older audience of G.I.'s and other adults) and left lobotomized superheroes and innocuous funny animals as virtually the only survivors on the newsstands. The article stated "We've committed some of our most censorious fol- lies in the guise of protecting our children." The New Yorker, April 19, 1999. Social In-Security Milton Friedman's comments on Social Security: "Complete privatization, establishing private accounts and tapering off gov- ernment activity is entirely feasible." "The Link between the payroll tax and benefit payments is part of a confidence game." AARP Bulletin, May ,1999 Do Not Disturb - or Spy on Me! In an aggressive effort to catch drug smugglers, New Jersey state troopers have enlisted workers at dozens of hotels along the New Jersey Turnpike to tip them off about suspicious guests. Some suspect activities: paying for room in cash, receiving a flurry of phone calls, asking for a corner room, hauling a trailer, moving from room to room, speaking Spanish. Hotel workers can receive rewards up to $1,000 for tips that lead to arrests. The New York Times, April 29, 1999 The Money Man J.S.G. Boggs is a world-renowned artist who likes to draw money - actual paper notes, one-sided but real size, in the denominations of standard currencies from all over the world. Many art collectors are avid to buy his drawings, but Boggs refuses to sell them. Rather, he prefers to find businessmen, hoteliers, restaurateurs, motorcycle salesmen, and the like, who will accept his work in lieu of cash payment. Authorities regularly try to nail Boggs on counterfeiting charges - charges from which juries all over the world have tended just as regularly, ever so merrily, to spring him. The New Yorker, May 10, 1999. Private School Plan Draws a Million Applicants A billionaire Wall Street financier who raised $170 million in scholarships to send 40,000 low-income children to private schools received requests from more than a million families. Theodore Forstmann, known for leveraged buyouts of Dr. Pepper and General Instruments, turned his business savvy to helping thousands of children escape failing public schools to attend private and reli- gious schools. ANDERSON GRAPHICS VINYL * LETTERS * SIGNS DISPLAYS * EXHIBITS CARDS * FORMS * BROCHURES (619)484-8436 fax (619)484-8461 ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Politics and Religion Ed Macomber It was said recently that the LP slogan "pro choice on every- thing" puts off some religious people because it is interpreted as a pro abortion stand. I maintain that there is no conflict between the LP and any faith, except where faith conflicts with an advocacy of freedom. The LP intentionally uses the wording "pro choice" in our "pro choice on everything" slogan, not because we are pro abortion or against any particular religion, but because we are pro freedom and pro every religion (even those religions that have no problem with abortion) and wish to be unambiguous about that. Failing to advocate for using force to prohibit something doesn't make us for that something, it just makes us against force: pro freedom … anti coercion. And, though the LP definitely stands for religious freedom, that doesn't mean we are trying to attract or sur- render to people whose faith makes them willing to dictate to others what their personal behavior should be. We are not afraid of "scar- ing away" such people, who are not fellow travelers in the battle for freedom. If, in the practice of your faith, you can leave others to the practice of theirs, and feel no urge to force others to live by your faith's moral precepts, then there is no conflict, and "welcome aboard". On the other hand, if you are so certain what other individu- als' personal & private moral decisions should be (re sexual orientation, pre-marital sex, adultery, drugs, tobacco, alcohol, caf- feine, abortion and so on) that you are willing to use force to make them comply with your views, then I maintain that the LP is *not* your party, whether such a "my way or this here gun" view is reli- giously motivated or just arrogance. The test is simple: if you think your religion or philosophy gives you the right to coerce other people to live by your rules, then the LP will not join you, it will stand in your path. Still, you will not find another political organization that will more vigorously defend your right to practice your faith as you see fit. It's simple: we defend anyone's right to practice their faith and live the way they choose, and at the same time defend the rights of others to live by a completely different or no faith. To live by the principles of the LP, it is not enough that you wish to live free, you must be willing to let others do the same. LP principles conflict with faith only where faith wishes to coerce personal behavior. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ 7.9¢ Per Minute Long Distance * Under 5 Cents in California * 24 Hours a Day - All the Time * Great Service (Fiber-Optic Lines) * Excellent International Rates * No Monthly Fees or Minimums * Six Second Billing * Calling Cards for 15 Cents * Free 800 Line (Same Rates) Plus the SDLP gets a cut of the action.
